- Reverend Faulkner established a religious community, the Aroostook Baptists. After only a few months all evidence of their existence disappeared. Now, several years later, a mass grave is found that is believed to be the members who disappeared. But the grave does not contain the bones of Faulkner. At nearly the same time, Grace Peltier is found dead in her car, an apparent suicide. But her father and former US senator Jack Mercier do not believe this and Mercier hires Parker to investigate. His investigation leads a charity that Parker believes is a cover for something more insidious. Furthermore, he now has a person know as Mr. Pudd and his female companion warning him to cease his investigation.
