Hazel Marie's uncle, Brother Vern, has invited himself to stay with Hazel Marie and generally making a nuisance of himself, again. Meanwhile, Miss Julia is also concerned about the faithfulness of Hazel Marie's husband, Mr. Pickens. He has been seen in town in the company of strange women. Therefore, Miss Julia gets Etta Mae's grandmother to help Hazel Marie with the twins and ailing James.
Throughout the book, the recipes that the women supplied to Miss Julia for Hazel Marie are recorded so that we all may enjoy the fruits of her labor.
