Sharpe's Enemy by Bernard Cornwell

Sharpe's Enemy (Richard Sharpe's Adventure Series #6) - An officer's wife is captured by an outlaw group of men that includes deserters from the French, British and Portugese armies.  Their leader, a Sergeant from the French who now calls himself Marshal Pot-au-Feu, has demanded ransom be delivered to a convent in the village of Adrados.  When Major Sharpe and Sargent Harper arrive, he meets a French officer that has come to rescue his wife and two other women who have been captured.  Of course Pot-au-Feu keeps both the money and the women.  Sharpe returns with a battalion, rescues the women, but ends up fighting the French as well.
