Julia Springer is newly widowed and finding that she had let herself be oppressed by her husband. She soon learns that he had an affair, that everyone but her seems to have known about. The other woman, Hazel Marie Puckett, drops off Wesley Lloyd Junior Springer at Julia's home and takes off for Raleigh. Deputy Coleman Bates, Julia's boarder, suggests that she notify Social Services. When she consults Pastor Ledbetter, not only does he suggest that she not take in the child, but that she should be careful not to besmirch her husband's good name.
On top of that, her pastor suggested that she should turn over all her affairs to someone in the church so she would not have to deal with such complex matters. Furthermore, Brother Vern, a TV preacher and the boy's uncle, wanting to get his hands on the boy's inheritance kidnaps him.
