- Baldacci introduces Amos Decker, a man who has perfect memory. Decker's memory wasn't always perfect. His brain, and personality was changed due to an extremely hard hit during his first, and only, pro football game. His life was changed once again when his wife and daughter, and brother-in-law were brutally murdered in his home. Eighteen months later, homeless, and working as a private investigator, Mary Lancaster, his ex-partner at the police department informs him that they made an arrest. While they are discussing the matter, a mass murderer attacks at the local high school. Special Agent Ross Bogart investigates on behalf of the FBI and Alex Jamison, a reporter, attaches herself to Decker in the investigation. As Decker investigates, he learns that the murders are related. Furthermore, somehow, they relate to his time at the institute where he was after his accident, learning how to deal with his new memory.
