- In 911 AD, Æthelred, Lord of Mercia is dying. Uhtred of Bebbanburg is suffering from his wounds sustained in his last battle. King Edward of Wessex; Ealdorman Æthelhem, King Edward's father-in-law; and Eardwulf, commander of Lord Æthelred's household troops intend to remove all opposition to the throne. They want Eardwulf to marry Æthelred's daughterÆkfwlynn so that he can rule Mercia under Edward's guidance. they also intend to kill Ælthered's only heir, Æthelstan. But, Uhtred is determined to protect Æthelstan and Ækfwlynn from this fate. He also intends to see Æthelflaed, King Edward's sister Æthelred's wife on the throne. Uhtred has with him his son, of whom he is proud, and his daughter, who he doesn't understand and for whom he must find a husband.
