- Gabriel Allon is in Venice restoring an altarpiece while he enjoys his respite from the secret world of intelligence. His wife Chiara is pregnant with twins and he is looking forward to their birth at the same time he is dreading his return to Israel as the head of the country's secret service in one year's time. However, the Italian police have Gabriel's friend Julian Isherwood in custody. Julian is a suspect in a murder in Lake Como. To free his friend, Gabriel agrees to investigate. As the investigation progresses, Gabriel learns that the victim was involved in the purchase and sale of stolen masterpieces. In order to catch the person who orders the stolen art, Gabriel devises a sting operation that involves stealing another masterpiece and auction it off for sale.
