Dawn Kincaid, who had murdered Jack, is Jack and Lawler's daughter. While Kay is speaking with Lawler, Lawler slips her a note requesting that Kay contact Jaime Berger by pay telephone. Later, both Lawler and Berger are killed by poison. Kay, her husband Benton, her niece Lucy, as well as Pete Marino find that they are not only after a vicious murderer, but that killer is also part of a diabolical plot that is killing woman inmates.In my opinion, this is not one of Cornwell's best. The story starts slow, and although the mystery deepens and keeps one interest, the resolution is disappointing and very unsatisfying.

- David Zinc is a burned out attorney at the law firm, Rogan Rothberg. When he quits, he spends the day in a bar and then walks into the struggling 2 man firm of Finley & Figg. Figg is always searching for the big case that will catapult them into the big time. He believes he found it in the drug Krayoxx. While he is "paying his respects", so that the widow will hire them to probate her husband's will, the son of the deceased informs Figg that he believes that Krayoxx killed his father and that there is already a lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company. Figg immediately jumps on the bandwagon, and files several lawsuits against the company, citing that Krayoxx killed the victims. David, although he is wary of Figg's actions, joins the firm and assists Figg in plying the case.

Kennedy airport and turn him over to the Feds. When he arrives at the airport with his partner Kate Mayfield, they discover that the plane that Khalil is on has been out of contact for over 2 hours. After the plane lands, they discover everybody on the plane has died. They later discover that Khalil has somehow escaped. As the ATTF investigates, members of a bombing squadron that bombed Lybya in 1986, are being murdered.

Skeeter, enlists the aid of Aibileen, the black maid of one of her friends, to help her write a book about what it is like to be black and servile to a white boss.
