Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor

Forever Amber - Written in the 1940's, some considered it to be "racy".  In today's world, it might not even get a PG rating.

The 1st time she saw Lord Carlton, Amber St. Clare fell in love.  The rest of her life she would do anything to have his love in return.  From the first, Carlton tells her he will not marry her, but he leaves her with enough money to survive.  It is the middle 1600's in England and 16 yr Amber is naive.  She trusts the wrong people, and ends up an actress in the King's theater.  She gains the eye of the King and marries noblemen.  She moves up in the world but does she is ever looking for the attention of Carlton.
