Day of the Cheetah - The Russians have a program where they insert moles into the US by replacing actual people who they believe will rise in importance.  In 1985 Andrei Maraklov has replaced Ken James just before he entered the Air Force Academy.  It is now 1994 and "Ken James" is the top test pilot at Dreamland and the only pilot who is able to fly the newest plane, DreamStar.  DreamStar is piloted by the human interfacing with the computer by brainwaves.  Maraklov is ordered by his handlers to steal DreamStar and return to Russia.  Patrick McLanahan and JC Powers use another test plane, Cheetah, to hunt down and stop the theft.

Hon'iden Matahachi is his best friend who vacillates between blaming Musashi for his dishonor and self-loathing.  Otsū is Matahachi's fiancée who falls in love with Musashi. Okō and her daughter Akemi who Musashi and Matahachi meet after Sekigahara and latch on to the pair for their own advancement.  Saski Kojirō Ganyrū who for his own advancement, sets himself up as Musashi's rival.  Takuan, a Zen monk, guides Musashi along the way to enlightment.  Jōtarō and Iori, the young boys who Musashi meets along his travels, who decide that they want him as their sensei.
