South of Broadby Pat Conroy South of Broad [DECKLE EDGE] - It is Charleston, South Carolina in the 1960’s. Leopold Bloom King’s superstar brother commits suicide. This puts Leo’s family into a down spiral. The summer before his senior year, Leo’s mother, also his principal, orders Leo to keep an eye on, but not befriend, new orphans Niles & Starla Whitehead. He is also charged with the twins across the street, Sheba & Trevor Poe as well as the new black coach’s son, Ike Jefferson. He is also expected to interact with local aristocrat teenagers, Chadworth Rutlege, his sister Fraser and girlfriend Molly Huger. This group of unlikely friends not only cements their friendship in high school, it is a group of friends that last a lifetime. In the 1980’s they face a murder seeking father, AIDS, and hurricanes.
