Ice: A Novel - Gabriel is home on leave for Christmas. When he gets into town, his father, the sheriff, asks him to check on Lolly Helton, she is at her family home that has no electricity or phone, and there is an ice storm coming. Gabriel remembers Lolly as a girl who always irritated him and is not happy because he wanted to spend his time with his son Sam.

Lolly is followed to her home by a couple who plan to rob her. Locked in her home she plans her escape.
