X by Sue Grafton
X (A Kinsey Millhone Novel)
- Ruth Wolinsky, the widow of Pete Wolinsky, is being audited by the IRS. Or more accurately, Pete Wolinsky's records are being audited. Ruth asks Kinsey if she came across any financial records, receipts, or other accounting records when she went through Pete's boxes. Although Kinsey didn't remember anything, she promised Ruth she would look in the box she still had. While doing so, Kinsey finds an envelope hidden in the bottom of the box. It is addressed to a priest, and dated over 20 years prior. Kinsey decides to investigate. Ruth's home and Kinsey's office are both searched by an unknown party. Kinsey realizes that the searches are because someone realizes that Pete had evidence that Kinsey and Ruth don't know they have or even if they do have it. As she investigates the envelope and talking to the people that Pete talked to, she realizes that she has judged Pete unfairly and that he was looking after several women who had become obsessions of a deranged man.
