- Aspiring singer, Lily Vance, is determined not to dwell on the horrors of WWI. Her mother acts as her agent and chaperone. Lily falls in love with Charlie, who, though he loves Lily as well, refuses to marry her. Captain Stephen Winters, suffering from shell shock, refuses to get help and insists that Lily is the answer to his problems. The second son of a wealthy family, Winters' family disapproves of Lily, but he marries her anyway. Once married, Lily and Stephen find that their lifestyles clash. As Lily tries to fit into the respectable lifestyle while continuing her career, she becomes a victim of the family's repression, jealousy, and violence.
