Silent Night by Mary Higgins Clark

Silent Night - Tom Dornan has leukemia and is recovering from surgery in New York City.  His wife, Catherine, and sons, Brian and Michael, are staying with Catherine's mother, Barbara.  Barbara had given Catherine a St. Christopher medal that saved her husband's life in WWII to give to Tom.  When Catherine drops her wallet while singing Christmas carols with the crowd on 5th Avenue, Cally Siddons picks it up. Seeing this, Brian chases after Cally to retrieve the medal.
