Dave Richmond, FBI agent, hid behind a desk.  Kate O'Malley entered the bank as a negotiator for hostage situations in Chicago.  Neither Dave nor Kate trusted the other in the beginning, but Dave conversed with Kate via notes. In the end, Dave believes that Kate saved his life and wants to get to know her better.  Kate, hesitates because she doesn't date cops.  When Kate begins to receive overt threats, Dave protects her with her brother, Marcus', blessing.  Later, they are involved in the investigation of a plane bombing that implicates Kate.

As a mystery, this story is very engaging.  However, I found the tone to be overly melancholic and I fell asleep several times while reading.
