Believing the Lie by Elizabeth George

Believing the Lie (Inspector Lynley) - Inspector Lynley is sent to Cumbria to investigate the drowning of Ian Cresswell at the request of his uncle Bernard Fairclough. He has brought with him, Simon and Deborah St. James. Ian's apparent concern is that his erstwhile errant son, Nicholas had been involved in his cousin's death.  Zed Benjamin, a reporter for The Source, had already been trying to get a story about the reformed son of the baron and was back in Cumbria looking for a way to sensationalize the story.  Nicholas' wife, beautiful Alatea, is hiding her past and is afraid that Deborah is there to expose her. Ian had been the treasurer for the family's money and had been paying his sister Mignon an unreasonable monthly stipend that he  wanted to stop.  Ian had left his wife, Niamh, for Kevah. Their children, Tim and Gracie were dumped on Ian and Kevah by Niamh.  Kevah and Ian had fought just before Ian's death.
