The Rebels by John Jakes

The Rebels (Kent Family Chronicles Volume 2) - The Rebels begins June 17, 1775.  Phillip Kent is fighting along with the American colonists who wish to throw off the yoke of English rule.  The story follows Phillip as he travels and fights with the army from Breed's Hill to Valley Forge.  At home, his wife Ann, having invested in Will Caleb privateer's operation, is fighting her own battles against Caleb's partner.

We also meet Judson Fletcher, who being denied marriage to the woman he loves, becomes a wastrel.  Jud is offered the chance to represent the colony of Virginia in the continental congress as they declare themselves a separate country from England.
