- Jacquetta is descended from the river goddess, Melusina, and she sometimes just knows things. Her 1st marriage is to the Duke of Bedford, whose only wish is to use her in his alchemy experiments and to foretell the future. Her 2nd marraige is for love to the duke's squire, Richard Woodville. She and Richard serve King Henry VI and his new queen. The story recounts several of the intrigues in "The Cousins' War" also known as the War of the Roses and how Jacquetta and Richard are involved.
