Patty Giacomin hires Spenser to retrieve her 15 yo son, Paul, from her ex-husband. Paul, it turns out, is only considered chattel by both parents. While the Giacomin’s work out their differences, Paul stays with Spenser, helping to build a cabin. Spenser, feeling that Paul needs to be anywhere but with his parents, searches to find something to hold over each of the Giacomin’s so that Paul would be free to become autonomous.
