Angelique is the daughter of Baron de Sance de Monteloup, poor gentry in France. As a child she runs wild among the fields. Her cousin Phillip du Plessis dubs her “The Countess of the Doleful Dress”. During one of her escapades, she witnesses the Prince de Conde sign a contract of allegiance to Monsieur Fouquet for the assassination of the King and his advisor. She steals and hides the casket which holds the contract and the other contracts already signed by others, including the Marquis du Plessis, with the vial of poison meant for the King.
When Angelique is of age, she is married off to Comte de Peyrac. Her dowry included a mine that the Comte wanted. After only a few years, the Comte is burned at the stake on trumped up charges of sorcery.
After the death of her husband, Angelique is destitute and finds herself in the underworld of Paris. There she meets a childhood friend, Nicholas, who has become a leader of the thieves. She also meets an innkeeper whose nephew, David, has the rights to manufacture chocolate. With these rights she begins a chocolate business and increases her wealth. She then blackmails her cousin Phillip into marriage and gets herself accepted at Versailles.
